Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 - Family Reserve

Tasting Notes

A private bottling which was released in celebration of the Platter’s 2023 Newcomer Winery of the Year Award. Limited quantities remain.

Complex nose of cassis, lead pencil, with the dusty tobacco and spicy tones of classic Cabernet Sauvignon. Palate follows through with layers of black fruit, mulberry, plums and black current, long balanced finish of silky tannins with good grip.

Michael Fridjhon – Wine Wizards: -“Cerise-edged, deep crimson. Slightly restrained black fruit aromas, hints of cassis, whiffs of violets. On the palate, well-managed tannins – soft, just creamy enough but still savoury and food-friendly. Nuanced, detailed and unshowy. Complete now and likely to stay this way for a long time.”

Suggested Food Pairing

Bacon-wrapped blue cheese stuffed dates or a savoury mushroom tart would make the perfect start to your meal followed with a good juicy steak, especially slightly fattier steaks like ribeye and sirloin, slow-braised lamb shanks, venison, ostrich, or duck. Grilled portobello mushrooms, eggplant dishes or a smoky black bean burger are great plant-based alternatives.

End your meal with a cheese and nut board especially hard cheese like aged cheddar, gorgonzola, and hazelnuts, or enjoy with fresh berries with zabaglione, a blackberry sorbet, or some dark chocolate.

Analysis

ALC 14.5 - RS 4.4 - TA 5.4 - Ph 3.60

Trade Winds Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 Family Reserve is made from grapes from low-yielding vines in Stellenbosch, South Africa’s outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon region.
2019 saw the smallest wine harvest for 14 years, largely due to the preceding three-year drought. The quality, however, was high. The cool weather conditions constituted smaller berries with a greater concentration of flavours and good acidity.
The wine was matured in 250ℓ French oak barrels, 2nd fill (no new wood) for a period of 18 months.
