Trade Winds Wine Cabernet Sauvignon 2019
Cabernet Sauvignon 2019

Tasting Notes

The complex nose reveals rich aromas of juicy black cherries, plums and blackcurrants followed by fragrant cedar wood and tobacco notes, showing distinctive character of a classic Cabernet Sauvignon. The nose follows on to a full rounded palate of developing flavours of black olives, cassis and subtle oak spice, with some fine ripe tannins giving a long soft finish.

Platter’s 2023 SA Wine Guide – Confident debut of 2019. Fruitcake-toned body given spice from 18 months in seasoned French oak. Inky depth & concentration delivered without loss of refinement, 18 months mellowing in bottle at cellar adding to the elegance.”

Suggested Food Pairing

Bacon-wrapped blue cheese stuffed dates or a savoury mushroom tart would make the perfect start to your meal followed with a good juicy steak, especially slightly fattier steaks like ribeye and sirloin, slow-braised lamb shanks, venison, ostrich, or duck. Grilled portobello mushrooms, eggplant dishes or a smoky black bean burger are great plant-based alternatives. End your meal with a cheese and nut board especially hard cheese like aged cheddar, gorgonzola, and hazelnuts, or enjoy with fresh berries with zabaglione, a blackberry sorbet, or some dark chocolate.

Analysis

ALC 14.5 - RS 4.1- TA 5.4 - Ph 3.75

The Trade Winds Cabernet Sauvignon 2019 is a harmonious blend of grapes from low-yielding old vines in Stellenbosch, South Africa’s outstanding Cabernet Sauvignon region – from elevated vineyards that benefit from cooling breezes off the ocean.
2019 saw the smallest wine harvest for 14 years, largely due to the preceding three-year drought. The quality, however, was of a high quality. The cool weather conditions constituted smaller berries with a greater concentration of flavours and good acidity.
The wine was matured in older 300ℓ French oak barrels, 2nd and 3rd fill (no new wood) for a period of 18 months – the balanced, integrated oak serving as a platform for the fruit to shine.
